There are many benefits you can enjoy from having artificial grass that make it a great choice for your garden, not least because our new award-winning varieties look and feel more like real grass than ever before. And, of course, it won’t suffer the kind of damage real grass does as a result of over-enthusiastic children and pets, or the wetter winters and drier summers we experience these days.
Nevertheless, artificial grass does need some maintenance if you want to get full value and maximum lifespan from your investment. Unlike real grass, if your artificial grass develops a problem, you can’t rely on a good watering or some fertiliser to bring it back to life.
This article will examine some things you can and should do when you have artificial grass to make sure it looks its best for the longest possible time.
General maintenance
Anyone who tells you that artificial grass is maintenance-free is not being honest. It’s certainly low-maintenance, and you won’t have to worry about keeping it watered or mown, but neither can you just sit back and expect it to last as long as it should without a little effort. This will include:
- Regular brushing – doing this with a soft brush at least once a month, or more during the summer when it’s dry and dusty, will keep the pile in top condition.
- Removal of dirt and debris – although general garden detritus, such as leaves, won’t damage your artificial grass, you might start to get weeds growing in it. Using a broom, leaf blower or plastic rake should get rid of most of what you want to.
- Hosing down with clean water – regular rain will help with this, but as we all know, this is no longer something we can count on anymore, especially during the summer months.
Protect from spillages and burn marks
Your artificial lawn should be able to withstand wear and tear as a result of everyday use for a good number of years, but you want to give it some extra protection when there’s a risk of more substantial damage as a result of spilling certain substances on it. Most spillages can easily be washed out, but with others – such as fence paint and oil-based liquids like sun cream – there’s a risk of more permanent damage if not quickly dealt with. If using these kinds of liquids, protect your artificial lawn as you would your carpet when decorating, and if the worst does happen, treat it immediately with a small amount of white spirit.
It’s also sensible to take extra precautions when there’s a risk of fire, so be extra careful with barbecues and discarded cigarettes.
Move heavy objects around
If you keep large, heavy objects on your artificial lawn – such as a trampoline, goal posts, flower pots or a bench – it’s sensible to move them around occasionally so that any wear and tear that results does so evenly. Where something heavy has been on your artificial grass, it’s likely to have been pressed flat by the weight, but you can easily get it standing up straight again with a quick brush.
Top up the sand infill
The sand infill in your artificial lawn plays an important role in protecting the fibres, improving drainage, increasing fire resistance and generally keeping it in good shape and looking like the real thing. General usage means that the sand will shift around, so it’s advisable to top it up every now and then, with a good brushing to follow to make sure that it is evenly distributed.
